We just got back from the Klepper’s Cabin celebrating 4th of July weekend. It was a bit of an adventure to say the least. We’d kept going back and forth trying to decide whether making the four-hour trek with a two-year and two-month old was the right thing to do. I’m slightly hesitant to say it but I think we made the right choice.
We got a great early start on the weekend by getting out of town around 3:00 Thursday afternoon and arrived at the cabin around 8:30. All-in-all we really lucked out on the trip since both the kids did great on the ride. After getting the trailer parked and everything situated it was way past Beau’s normal bedtime, big mistake. On top of the normal meltdown that occurs if you keep him up past his bedtime, it turns out Beau is really scared of moths when they’re dive-bombing him in his pack-in-play. Between the meltdown and the moths uncle Dan thought he’d have to call 911 and report all the screaming. That may have been an indicator of the trip to come. As a side note we also discovered Beau is dreadfully scared of turtles and toads, we were beginning to wonder if he really is a Dworak.
We woke up to a beautiful Nebraska day on Friday. Unfortunately we found out Luke had been sick that morning and was all cuddled up on the couch.
Everyone else was in good spirits and was ready to start enjoying the weekend. We had a fairly uneventful day. Some of the folks went out boating, we spent the day hanging around the cabin just being lazy. I may have had a few too many mid day beers?
It wasn’t until Saturday morning that we realized something wasn’t right when there was a line at the bathroom that consisted of Wendy, Beth and Lauren (Beth’s roommate). Apparently they had all woken up having a puking contest, not good when there’s only one bathroom. Beth and Wendy seemed to be on the same “schedule” so those two were fighting each other for bathroom rights. I still hadn’t show any symptoms and continued to enjoy the day.
Luke and I took Beau and Jake for their first bow fishing adventure.
I was somewhat surprised when cousin Luke being the champion athlete that he is couldn’t hit a fish to save his life. I attribute this to his being only 92% recovered from the flu, considering I’d been calling him “Robin Hood” Klepper since the Jackson Lake bowfishing adventure. But after this weekend I may have to go back to his old nickname, Pukey-Lukey?
After the bowfishing (which was quite excellent right behind the cabin) we grabbed aunt Rose and took the boys swimming in the lake. Glad they both got a chance to see what fun a lake can be in the middle of summer and I think they both had good time. Unfortunately, after returning to the cabin I was puking within minutes and poor Beau was right behind me. It’s pretty tough watching those little guys get sick. He was walking around without a care in the world pointing out rocks, dirt and sand all the while puke spraying out of this mouth and he hardly seemed to care, he only seemed somewhat confused as to what was happening. At that point I tried to find some floor/couch space in the infirmary a.k.a. “Kleppers Cabin”, but by this time Big Dan was also cuddled up on a chair wrapped in a blanket and the rest of the chairs, floor and couch were flooded with people wrapped in blankets. As of this writing Aunt Rose and Big Ron were the only two who survived unscathed. Apparently Big Nanc caught the bug Sunday afternoon and didn’t make it into work Monday. Quite the trip, still glad we went though. Beau got to ride a boat, swim in the lake, visit with his relatives, and see turkeys, deer, rabbits, toads and turtles. Even though he could have done without the toads and turtles.

I heard about this, and I think it all sounds pretty puke tastic.
