2017 Season Update

1

Hi all,

It has been quite a while since I’ve checked in over here but with our Colorado Archery Elk opener only a few days away I thought I’d give y’all a quick update.  We’re changing things up quite a bit this year.  I’m forgoing my longstanding opening morning spot which has treated me superbly well over the years for a chance to hunt our other “week-long” spot a little earlier in the season.  The thought being those animals will be a little less pressured early in the season. I’ll be the first to admit it’s tough to make changes to things you’ve dialed-in over the years, but I figured if you don’t life gets too predictable.

To further make for an interesting year, my dad (Big Ron), drew a Mountain Goat tag for the same unit I hunted several years ago – 2014 Mountain Goat – Chicago Basin.  So we’ve got two back-to-back hunts (did I mention Wendy’s awesome??) and I’m both thrilled and terrified at the same time.  Obviously thrilled because I’m grateful for the opportunity to be living under the stars for two weeks, and terrified because I’m usually pretty dang beat up after the 8-mile trek out of our elk camp after climbing up and down the mountain for a week.  This year we have only ONE day for recovery before heading back into the Weminuche Wilderness for the goat hunt, which is another 8-mile hike with 3,000 ft. vertical gain and I’m almost guaranteed to be hiking out with a 110#+ pack.  It should be quite the adventure…

Good luck to everyone heading out this weekend.  Stay safe & keep the wind in your face.

I don’t have a good pic to start this adventure off with so I’m bringing back one of my favorite videos, ha!
