Salty Dog – Wayne Depperschmidt

As usual we had a lot of tough competition for this year’s Salty Dog Award, but the top honors have to go to our friend and local legend Wayne Depperschmidt.   Wayne shot a Shiras moose with his recurve this fall and became the first Colorado archer to harvest all ten of Colorado’s big game species with traditional equipment.

For those who need a reminder, Colorado’s Big Eight include:  elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, antelope, black bear, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goat, mountain lion.  The addition of Desert Sheep and Shiras moose get you into the more prestigious Big Ten club.

” I used a 43 lb. Black Canyon Recurve, Magnus 2, 4 blade broadhead on Easton Full Metal Jacket shaft, 580 grains arrow wt.
One arrow at around 15 to 20 Yds, hit was through both lungs, he went as far as he could in a few seconds. – Wayne”

In addition to being an icon in our archery/hunting community Wayne is also the custom knife maker referenced in the book. You’ll typically see his knives at various sportsmans banquets in Colorado, and as always they’re in top demand.

A huge congrats to Wayne, the world needs more guys like him.
